Jungle warfare, 15 Dec 1942.

General description of the collection: Jungle warfare contains a copy of Reeder's report on lessons learned by U.S. Army infantry soldiers and U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal from August through December 1942. This signed copy was supplied by Reeder to Lieutenant General Lesley McNair. Reeder's report was submitted to the Chief of Staff, U.S. Army, General Marshall, on 15 December 1942. The report contains Reeder's summary of lessons learned followed by excerpts from his interviews with members of the 1st Marine Division and the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal Division). The interviewees consist of "outstanding fighters" selected by generals Alexander Vandegrift and Alexander Patch, and include members of division and regimental staffs, company grade officers, and highly regarded sergeants and corporals. The interviewees give their opinions about necessary improvements in training for jungle warfare, equipment, weapons, and supplies. They describe the Japanese tactics they encountered on Guadalcanal, and how they countered them. This report was likely the basis for "Fighting on Guadalcanal," which General George Marshall ordered distributed to American, British and Chinese soldiers in training.
